Modern Technologies

We’re all enjoying the conveniences and happiness brought by modern technologies. We use telephones and mobile phones to call, emails to write and vehicles to drive; we go to another country by air planes; we see what is happening in the world by TV programs and Internet, and we even watch sports games on live. Nowadays, without these technologies, I can’t imagine what my life could be.

I used to read an article describing the modern lives of human beings. It says we will have many phone numbers if we want to search for one person; we send emails and cell phone messages to our friends in stead of visiting them. More and more people would rather sit in front of a computer than a TV. And we seldom go to libraries to check information now, because the Internet would do all the jobs.

We use digital cameras, scanners, photocopiers, blue teeth technology and digital signals for our cell phones… It seems as if we were living in a real digital world. Actually I guess we are, though. Since we are so developed and advanced, why we are less civilized?

We are easily mad with our broken computers; we fed up with things we don’t like; we call our lovers to say “farewell and good-bye” and we are afraid to face the facts which are cruel and real. We’re led to a trend that there will no more face-to-face communications. I would rather chat with my friends with OICQ and emails these years, instead of seeing them in reality.

I hide myself inside my car so that I can flee away from dirt, air pollutions, robberies, thieves, winds, rains and snows. However, I could not taste the spring rain and the winter snow either. The nature is fleeing away from me too!

Should I thank modern technologies or blame them? I wonder if you have got the right answer.

My Girlfriend is Cat---- By smellycatty

We knew each other on the forum of New Oriental School. That time, we both had been hurt, drifting in a lonely city for a long time, yearning to fly, and craving for true and forever love.

I studied GMAT by myself in a rented small flat, she was working hard to go abroad as a post-doctor. Studying for the test, writing her emails, and having long talks over the phone late at night became a habit as well as the happiest moments of my otherwise boring and lonely life. Before long, I found myself attached to the sweet voice and the gentleness of the girl I had never met.

One night, before I hung up the phone, a sadness and romance surged up in me. And I said to her: “I want to sing a song to you.” I used to be a big music fan in college. I listened to music as a way of dealing with the bland school life. And I also liked to yell some tunes in the corridor or on my way back to my dorm at night. Some people labeled my style “street singer” who’s from the suburb of Hong Kong.

The song I sang that night is the original Japanese version of an old song by the name of “Half Full Moon(月半弯)”. As I already said, I sang it thousands of times on the street, in corridor and Karaoke Bars. But my performance has never been that good this time. I didn’t know or wasn’t sure what kind of person she would be in my life. Maybe a friend on the Internet, maybe just an ordinary friend, or even my future girlfriend, I had absolutely no idea. She was some girl I hadn’t met, so I just treated her as a listener to my heart.

What happened later was an abrupt twist. One dark and windy night, our friendship became a love caught on fire because of my not bad singing. On an impulse, I whispered to her, “Tell you the truth, all my life, I am looking for someone, with her, we could become happy for the rest of our life.”

On the other end of the phone, she choked up and started sobbing. All of a sudden, I realized that both she and I wished to bring the other happiness.

From my past experience and instinct, I thought that I should do something immediately. So a few days later, driven by curiosity and passion, I decided to visit her. My surprise visit indeed shocked her. It seemed to me that she still wanted to keep on our relationship by telephone and Internet. Later she told me that this gave her lots of romance and fun for imagination.

Urged by my pleading and threatening, she showed up, a small girl with embarrassment and excitement all over her face. I was more than one head tall than her. Walking beside her, I turned my head and couldn’t see her. Her hairs were blown up by wind, brushing against my face and making me very itchy. I was trying very hard to figure out some topics, suddenly my hand was in her hand.

This could be the greatest embarrassment of my whole life. Never before had my hand been hold by a girl first. In a second, I felt like that I became a girl walking on the street with hand hold. We walked and walked. A long time passed, we tried to loose each other up by talking about some funny things. She was much easy-going than I thought she would be. But I was much shyer than I used to believe.

A red dragon in the global economy

Many Chinese believe that for China to be strong its trade account must not be in the red. It must have a trade surplus to grow prosperous. So if we look back at 5000 years of Chinese history, it would be surprising that the time China’s trade was in the red was also just when the ‘middle kingdom’ was at its peak during that dynasty.

For example, during Han Dynasty, China ran a trade deficit for centuries with neighboring countries, and it was also the time China became the center of the Asia. Another obvious example is the Tang and Song Dynasty (from 7th century to 11th century), when China was again in a trade deficit with nearly all its neighbors. China was then experiencing shortages of gold, silver or even bronze, but none of this had blocked the red dragon from being the strongest nation at that time. But at the end of Song Dynasty, just decades before the Chinese were invaded and defeated by Mongolians, China became the main exporter in Asia and it was one of the several periods when China was weak. Historians cannot simply conclude this as coincidence.

Recent history tells the same story. The end of 19th century was a nightmare for the ancient nation. Many blamed the trade deficit that resulted from opium trade as the plague which caused the weakness of China’s economy in the late Qing Dynasty. However, if we put opium trade aside, China was still a large exporter in the world while it imported little from the outside world. At some point, China’s trade partners had to use opium as a way to pay for their trade deficit with China. Earlier, in the middle of the 18th century, China could produce enough opium for domestic market and also become an exporter in normal definition, but it didn’t help China to be a stronger nation at all. When China launched its first industrialization campaign, it’s trade soon turned into red again, but this happened during the last struggle of Qing Dynasty in its dying years.

After its opening-up in 1978, China was in the red again for eleven years, with the exception of 1983. The government is implementing of a strategy of stimulating exports initially from China’s opening-up. It is a reasonable policy for a post-communism economy which is lack of an efficient fiancé system and a minimum-required foreign currency reserve.

Since 1990, China has been chalking up trade surplus with the exception of 1993. In 2004, the trade surplus of China amounts to $70 billion, of which $58.6 billion from Sino-US trade. With its expanding of trade surplus, its economic rapid growth continues for decades. At the same time, Chinese factories are famous for dumping cheap goods from advantages of its low-cost labors and poor environment standard. After all, China is developing, much faster than EU, US, Japan or any other major power of the world. There is no doubt that China is regaining its strength and will be a major economic power in the 21st century.

What will China bring to the globalization of economy? Even for a country of 1.2 billion population and 960 square kilometers, there is no unlimited supply of cheap labor or unlimited tolerance of environment pollution. However, the demand of the 1.2 billion population market in a fast-growing economy could be the powerful engine of the global economy in human history. Some of Chinese key officials and scholars has turned to pro-deficit attitude on this debate and more and more people realize that China has no responsibility to supply the world with cheap goods while the living standard of Chinese people are below average level. While those booming Chinese companies have shown their appetites for raw materials on the global market, the extravagance of Chinese wealthy family in cities has given hopes to global manufacturers.

Most of the pressure to grow imports comes from China’s trade partners, especially US and Japan. A strong wind calling for the revaluation of RMB has been blowing since the beginning of 2003, and some even criticize China as an exporter of deflation. At the same time, huge amounts of hot money flow into China despite capital controls that strictly limit money flows into this country. Chinese officials have openly refused to revaluate RMB under pressure and some even say that its a conspiracy to sacrifice China’s economy without bringing benefits to the global economy. But those strong words against the revaluation of RMB were more or less for internal politics. The government then began to boost the imports to ease the pressure on the currency.

Domestically, there are more and more criticisms against the stimulating-export policies, especially the tax reimbursement policy. The tax reimbursement to exporters has aggravated the fiscal deficit of the central government. The government has paid 125 billion RMB and 115 billion RMB for tax reimbursement. This appropriation was far from the amount incurred every year and up to the end of 2003, the tax reimbursement in arrears reached to 340 billion RMB ($41.06 billion). The profit margin rates of many exporters are below the reimbursement rate. As the default of payment accumulated year-by-year, some exporters have fallen into liquidity problem while waiting for the payment of tax reimbursement in arrears.

So China should not be afraid to become red in trade, like it has during many periods of greatness. If the dragon becomes be red for years or even decades, the most foreseeable consequence is that RMB will be an international currency. To support an international currency, China should build ‘a stable macroeconomic environment, an efficient market mechanism and a healthy banking system’ as Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao mentioned as the preconditions for a revaluation of RMB. It is easy to say what’s good but it is difficult to identify the problems and solve them. When the growth is still enough to sustain the system, who will be brave enough to cut the mess behind the rise? China should not be afraid to become red again.

Make your fate in control

Fate is determined by character, and character is determined by knowledge, desire and habit. If a person wants to change his fate, he has to change his character first; and if he wants to change his character, he has to change his knowledge or his desires and habits. Complaining to other people or the environments makes no sense.

Actually, everybody in this world will know about the meaning of life. It’s just the matter of time. A worker, who had just lost his job, met a university professor one day. He admitted that he didn’t love to study when he was a student. He just hated to study no matter what and how his father asked him to. When he got a job and became a worker, he realized how important to have knowledge in this world. But, it was too late…

There are no parents who don’t think studying is important for their children, and all the parents tell their children to study hard. We, however, still have so much difference on different children, on the results, that we finally will know it’ is the matter of self-control.

When we are kids in a primary school, we see no difference from each other. We just know somebody is good at Chinese, Math or Sports. We just know that the teacher likes him or her. Nowadays, we differentiate our classmates by their parents. We say: oh, god, his father is the vice mayor, his father is very rich; his mother is the dean of the biggest hospital…. This is definitely not a good sign for China and the Chinese people, because it makes no competition for the youngsters, who are having China’s future in hand.

The poor always hate the rich, because they see the rich driving all the luxury cars, living in condominiums, villas and spending money like they are countless. And the poor see the rich always on vocations, always so relaxed and enjoyable. So the poor are jealous and they wonder how can the rich be so rich and the poor are so poor. Well, the poor obviously forget one thing: When the rich are working hard and smart to collect money, the poor are lying somewhere and making complains.

Make your fate and success in control; you can make a difference in the future, unless you want to a poor person, both mentally and physically.

Love, love, love

Please forgive me because I’m not talking about the popular song here. I really love that song, though! What I want to bring to you people here is something I’d like to discuss with.

Love is indeed a big concept. Thus it makes some people confused or feel blur. As I have mentioned before in this forum, I don’t even differ “love” from “like” sometimes. Can you?

I know nobody who doesn’t want his life filled with love. One is/has been/will be receiving love from his parents, relatives, friends, colleagues, lovers and whatsoever living creatures, including animals. Fully enjoying love from around me is what I always long for. How happy and joyful I would be if I could have love everywhere in this planet!

Love conquers everything in human’s world. The more civilized and developed a country is, the more love you will see in there. I saw many charity organizations in Singapore and Canada, and I believe there must be many in other developed countries. There is, however, so few in China. Even though there are some similar organizations in China, I’m afraid they are not doing their jobs.

The most popular case we can see in China is Leukemia. I have all along been donating money to those patients, since I was a student. I just feel that’s the only way I can use to help them.

The other case is raised by baggers, who are wandering in the streets all the time. They are everywhere in the cities. They are annoying sometimes, because they would even pull your pants to hold you back if you refuse to give them cashes. I pay more respect to those who would rather go collecting rubbishes at nights than being criminals to steal or rob, or commit whatever bad things against the local citizens. Once a 80 over years old woman was seen lying on the side of a road. I saw her too, for several times. She seldom bagged for money, she wanted foods and clothes more than cashes. Each time I passed by, I would give her 10 Yuan, not for pitying her, but do what I could to be of help. She died one year later. I was sad when I heard the news because I couldn’t imagine what kind of children she had would abandon their parents! She must be very sad and desperate when she left her home; she must be tough and strong to survive in such a big cold city alone for years; she must be thinking about something before her death; she must be…

If there is another life for this wretched poor woman after her death, I hope she would have a much better life by then. May her soul rest in peace.

When someone looks into your eyes they should see something alive within you. Having a dream is like owning a lighthouse1 which directs you on your journey.

At every turn we come across its mystery. At each new level we become more of the person we were meant to become. In lonely times, when we pass through a storm of disappointment, we find our faith is unshaken, our strength still strong.

Believe in your faith. Set the vision before your eyes. Write down your most sincere dreams and when the opportunity comes, step into your dream. It may take one season or more, but the result is the same. Make big dreams and then go out and make them realities. The highest hopes of the dreamer are revealed with every step taken in their journey to the impossible. For a season we must protect the dream so that it can grow quietly on the inside. But if we tenderly care for our deepest expectations, slowly but surely the dream will become new life.

Dreaming is an act of faith. The light of your expectations will cast off the shadows of a disbelieving world. God has given us the dreamer as a gift to light an unbelieving world.

Find your treasure within and cherish it. Tomorrow is waiting for you to take the first step.

There is no better school than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve my performance next time. Never again will I contribute to my downfall by refusing to face the truth and learn from my past mistakes. Because I know: gems cannot shine without polish, and I can not perfect myself without hardship.

Now I know that there are no times in life when opportunity, the chance to be and do gathers so richly about my soul when it has to suffer cruel adversity. Then everything depends on whether I raise my head or lower it in seeking help. Whenever I am struck down, in the future, by any terrible defeat, I will inquire of myself, after the first pain has passed, how I can turn that adversity into good. What a great opportunity that moment may present……to take the bitter root I am holding and transform it into fragrant garden of flowers.

Always will I seek the seed of triumph in every adversity.

Our character, basically, is a composite of our habits. “Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny,” the maxim goes.

Habits are powerful factors in our lives. Because they are consistent, often unconscious patterns, they constantly, daily, express our character and produce our effectiveness or ineffectiveness.

As Horace Mann, the great educator, once said, “Habits are like a cable. We weave a strand of it everyday and soon it cannot be broken.” I personally do not agree with the last part of his expression. I know habits can be learned and unlearned. But I also know it isnt a quick fix. It involves a process and a tremendous commitment.

Those of us who watched the lunar voyage of Apollo 11 were transfixed as we saw the first men walk on the moon and return to earth. But to get there, those astronauts literally had to break out of the tremendous gravity pull of the earth. More energy was spent in the first few minutes of lift-off, in the first few miles of travel, than was used over the next several days to travel half a million miles.

Habits, too, have tremendous gravity pull- more than most people realize or would admit. Breaking deeply imbedded habitual tendencies such as procrastination, impatience, criticalness, or selfishness that violate basic principles of human effectiveness involves more than a little willpower and a few minor changes in our lives. “Lift off” takes a tremendous effort, but once we break out of the gravity pull, our freedom takes on a whole new dimension.

Like any natural force, gravity pull can work with us or against us. The gravity pull of some of our habits may currently be keeping us from going where we want to go. But it is also gravity pull that keeps our world together, that keeps the planets in their orbits and our universe in order. It is a powerful force, and if we use it effectively, we can use the gravity pull of habit to create the cohesiveness and order necessary to establish effectiveness in our lives.

A young friend of mine asked me in a letter, “What kind of man should I be?” My answer was, “Be a fighter.”

Another friend of mine inquired, “How should I live my life?” Again my answer was, “Be a fighter.”

The author of In Praise of the Fighter says:

Riding on the ceaseless rushing torrent of life, I should pursue and overtake it so as to create an even greater and deeper torrent of my own.

If I were a lamp, it would be my duty to light up thick darkness. If I were the sea tide, I would marshal rolling waves to cleanse the beach of all accumulated filth.

This quotation reflects aptly the state of mind of a lighter.

Fighters are badly needed in our time. But such fighters do not necessarily go to the battle- field gun in hand. Their weapons are not necessarily bullets. Their weapons may be knowledge, faith and strong will. They can bring the enemy sure death without drawing his blood.

A fighter is always in pursuit of light. Instead of basking in the sunshine under a clear sky, he holds a burning torch in the darkness of night to illuminate peoples way so that they can continue their journey till they see the dawn of a new day. It is the task of a fighter to dispel darkness. Instead of shirking darkness, he braves it and fights the hidden demons and monsters therein. He is determined to wipe them out and win light. He knows no compromise. He will keep on fighting until he wins light.

A fighter is perennially young. He is never irresolute or inactive. He plunges deep into teeming crowds in search of such vermin as flies and venomous mosquitoes. He will fight them relentlessly and refuse to coexist with them under the same sky. To him, life means nothing but continuous fighting. He either survives by winning light, or perishes with his body covered all over with cuts and bruises. In the course of the struggle, it is the “future” that serves as the beacon light to him; the “future” gives people hope and inspiration. He will never lose his youthful vigour.

A fighter will never lose heart or despair. He will pile up broken pieces of brick and stone to rebuild a nine-story pagoda on the ruins of failure. No blows will ever break his will. He will never close his eyes until he has breathed his last.

A fighter is always fearless. His steps are firm. Once he has settled on an objective, he will press right ahead. He is never afraid of being tripped by a stumbling block. No obstacles will ever make him change his mind. His eyes will never be hoodwinked by false appearances. His actions are guided by faith. He can endure any hardships or sufferings while striving to attain his chosen objective. He will never abandon work as long as he is alive.

This is the kind of fighter we now need. He is not necessarily possessed of superhuman capability. He is just an ordinary person. Anyone can be a fighter so long as he has the determination. Hence a few words of mine about “being a fighter” to encourage those young people who wander about in a depressed state, not knowing which way to go.

Brownie and Spotty were neighbor dogs who met every day to play together. Like pairs of dogs you can find in most any neighborhood, these two loved each other and played together so often that they had worn a path through the grass of the field between their respective houses.

One evening, Brownies family noticed that Brownie hadnt returned home. They went looking for him with no success. Brownie didnt show up the next day, and, despite their efforts to find him, by the next week he was still missing.

Curiously, Spotty showed up at Brownies house alone. Barking, whining and generally pestering2 Brownies human family. Busy with their own lives, they just ignored the nervous little neighbor dog.

Finally, one morning Spotty refused to take “no” for an answer. Ted, Brownies owner, was steadily harassed3 by the furious, adamant4 little dog. Spotty followed Ted about, barking insistently, then darting toward a nearby empty lot and back, as if to say, “Follow me! Its urgent!”

Eventually, Ted followed the frantic Spotty across the empty lot as Spotty paused to race back and bark encouragingly. The little dog led the man under a tree, past clumps5 of trees, to a desolate spot a half mile from the house. There Ted found his beloved Brownie alive, one of his hind legs crushed in a steel leghold trap. Horrified, Ted now wished hed taken Spottys earlier appeals seriously. Then Ted noticed something quite remarkable.

Spotty had done more than simply led Brownies human owner to his trapped friend. In a circle around the injured dog, Ted found an array of dog food and table scraps1 which were later identified as the remains of every meal Spotty had been fed that week!

Spotty had been visiting Brownie regularly, in a single瞞inded quest to keep his friend alive by sacrificing his own comfort. Spotty had evidently stayed with Brownie to protect him from predators2, snuggling with him at night to keep him warm and nuzzling3 him to keep his spirits up.

Brownies leg was treated by a veterinarian and he recovered. For many years thereafter, the two families watched the faithful friends frolicking4 and chasing each other down that well瞱orn path between their houses.

A man wanted to buy an ass. He went to the market, and saw a likely one. But he wanted to test him first. So he took the ass home, and put him into the stable with the other asses.

With this thought, he made a snap at the other dogs meat. And as he did, his own meat fell into the water. So then he had nothing at all.

What makes me angry? Mostly, I hate when someone tries to make someone else feel bad. I have to admit that once, when I was really angry, I actually called names. I regretted doing this afterwards, but not full heartedly because I think I was provoked in that situation.

The most positive way of dealing with anger is talking about the problem. I talk to someone who listens, or Ill write my thoughts down on paper. Learning how to deal with anger as youre growing up is so important. When youre younger, you might yell, or cry when youre angry, but as you get older, youre expected to handle your emotions much better.

Learning to control your emotion now will prevent you from doing something that youll regret later on in life!

Whether we find a joke funny or not largely depends on where we have been brought up. The sense of humour is mysteriously bound up with national characteristics. A Frenchman, for instance, might find it hard to laugh at a Russian joke. In the same way, a Russian might fail to see anything amusing in a joke which would make an Englishman laugh to tears.

Most funny stories are based on comic situations. In spite of national differences, certain funny situations have a universal appeal. No matter where you live, you would find it difficult not to laugh at, say, Charlie Chaplins early films. However, a new type of humour, which stems largely from America, has recently come into fashion. It is cal1ed sick humour . Comedians base their jokes on tragic situations like violent death or serious accidents. Many people find this sort of joke distasteful. The following example of sick humour will enable you to judge for yourself.

A man who had broken his right leg was taken to hospital a few weeks before Christmas. From the moment he arrived there, he kept on pestering his doctor to tell him when he would be able to go home. He dreaded having to spend Christmas in hospital. Though the doctor did his best, the patients recovery was slow. On Christmas day, the man still had his right leg in plaster. He spent

a miserable day in bed thinking of all the fun he was missing. The following day, however, the doctor consoled him by telling him that his chances of being able to leave hospital in time for New Year celebrations were good. The man took heart and, sure enough, on New Years Eve he was able to hobble along to a party. To compensate for his unpleasant experiences in hospital, the man drank a little more than was good for him. In the process, he enjoyed himself thoroughly and kept telling everybody how much he hated hospitals. He was still mumbling something about hospitals at the end of the party when he slipped on a piece of ice and broke his left leg.

Small boats loaded with wares sped to the great liner as she was entering the harbour. Before she had anchored, the men from the boats had climbed on board and the decks were soon covered with colourful rugs from Persia, silks from India, copper coffee pots, and beautiful hand-made silver-ware. It was difficult not to be tempted. Many of the tourists on board had begun bargaining with the tradesmen, but I decided not to buy anything until I had disembarked. I had no sooner got off the ship than I was assailed by a man who wanted to sell me a diamond ring. I had no intention of buying one, but I could not conceal the fact that I was impressed by the size of the diamonds. Some of them were as big as marbles. The man went to great lengths to prove that the diamonds were real. As we were walking past a shop, he held a diamond firmly against the window and made a deep impression in the glass. It took me over half an hour to get rid of him.

The next man to approach me was selling expensive pens and watches. I examined one of the pens closely. It certainly looked genuine. At the base of the gold cap, the words made in the U.S.A. had been neatly inscribed. The man said that the pen was worth &10, but as a special favour, he would let me have it for &8. I shook my head and held up a finger indicating that I was willing to

pay a pound. Gesticulating wildly, the man acted as if he found my offer outrageous, but he eventually reduced the price to &3. Shrugging my shoulders, I began to walk away when, a moment later, he ran after me and thrust the pen into my hands. Though he kept throwing up his arms in despair, he readily accepted the pound I gave him. I felt especially pleased with my wonderful bargain--until I got back to the ship. No matter how hard I tried, it was impossible to fill this beautiful pen with ink and to this day it has never written a single word !

A girl will never forget the first boy she likes, even if things dont quite work out. But usually someone is there to offer words of wisdom: “Honey, do you know why that little boy did those things and said those things? Because he likes you.”

And there it is, thats the beginning of our problem. Do you know what this means? Were all encouraged…No! programmed… To believe that if a guy acts like a total jerk, that means he likes you. Why do we say this stuff to each other? Is it possible that its because were too scared and its too hard to say the one obvious truth thats staring everyone in the face?——Hes just not that into youEvery movie we see, every story were told, implores us to wait for it. The third act twist. The unexpected declaration of love. The exception to the rule. But sometimes were so focused on finding our happy ending, we dont learn how to read the signs, how to tell the ones who want us from the ones who dont, the ones who will stay from the ones who will leave. Maybe this happy ending doesnt include a wonderful guy. Maybe its you, on your own, picking up the pieces and starting over, freeing yourself up for something better in the future. Maybe the happy ending is just moving on.

Or maybe the happy ending is this: knowing that through all the unreturned phone calls, and broken hearts, through all the blunders and misread signals, through all of the pain and embarrassment, you never, ever gave up hope.

On Motes and Beams

It is curious that our own offenses should seem so much less heinous than the offenses of others. I suppose the reason is that we know all the circumstances that have occasioned them and so manage to excuse in ourselves what we cannot excuse in others. We turn our attention away from our own defects, and when we are forced by untoward events to consider them, find it easy to condone them. For all I know we are right to do this; they are part of us and we must accept the good and bad in ourselves together.

But when we come to judge others, it is not by ourselves as we really are that we judge them, but by an image that we have formed of ourselves fro which we have left out everything that offends our vanity or would discredit us in the eyes of the world. To take a trivial instance: how scornful we are when we catch someone out telling a lie; but who can say that he has never told not one, but a hundred?

There is not much to choose between men. They are all a hotchpotch of greatness and littleness, of virtue and vice, of nobility and baseness. Some have more strength of character, or more opportunity, and so in one direction or another give their instincts freer play, but potentially they are the same. For my part, I do not think I am any better or any worse than most people, but I know that if I set down every action in my life and every thought that has crossed my mind, the world would consider me a monster of depravity. The knowledge that these reveries are common to all men should inspire one with tolerance to oneself as well as to others. It is well also if they enable us to look upon our fellows, even the most eminent and respectable, with humor, and if they lead us to take ourselves not too seriously.

Relish the Moment

Tucked away in our subconsciousness is an idyllic vision. We see ourselves on a long trip that spans the moment. We are traveling by train. Out the windows, we drink in the passing scene of cars on nearby highways, of children waving at a crossing, of cattle grazing on a distant hillside, of smoke pouring from a power plant, of row upon row of corn ad wheat, of flatlands and valleys, of mountains and rolling hillsides, of city skylines and village halls.

But uppermost in our minds is the final destination. On a certain day at a certain hour, we will pull into the station. Bands will be playing and flags waving. Once we get there, so many wonderful dreams will come true and the pieces of our lives will fit together like a completed jigsaw puzzle. How restlessly we pace the aisles, damning the minutes for loitering---waiting, waiting, waiting for the station.

“When we reach the station, that will be it!” we cry. “When I’m 18.” “When I buy a new 450SL Mercedes Benz!” “When I put the last kid through college.” “When I have paid off the mortgage!” “When I get a promotion.” “When I reach the age of retirement, I shall live happily ever after!”

Sooner or later, we must realize there is no station, no one place to arrive at once and for all. The true joy of life is the trip. The station is only a dream. It constantly outdistances us.

It isn’t the burdens of today that drive men mad. It is the regrets over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow. Regret and fear are twin thieves who rob us of today.

So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, climb more mountains, eat more ice cream, go barefoot more often, swim more rivers, watch more sunsets, laugh more, cry less. Life must be lived as we go along. The station will come soon enough.

If we look at the sky on a perfectly fine summers day we shall find that the blue colour is the most pure and intense overhead, and when looking high up in a direction opposite to the sun.

Near the horizon it is always less bright, while in the region immediately around the sun it is more or less yellow. The reason of this is that near the horizon we look through a very great thickness of the lower atmosphere, which is full of the larger dust particles reflecting white light, and this diluter the pure blue of the higher atmosphere seen beyond, and in the vicinity of the sun a good deal of the blue light is reflected back into space by the finer dust, thus giving a yellowish tinge to that which reaches us reflected chiefly from the coarse dust of the lower atmosphere.

At sunset and sunrise, however, this last effect is greatly intensified, owing to the great thickness of the strata of air through which the light reaches us. The enormous amount of this dust is well shown by the fact that then only we can look full at the sun, even when the whole sky is free from clouds and there is no apparent mist.

But the suns rays then reach us after having passed, first, through an enormous thickness of the higher strata of the air,the minute dust of which reflects most of the higher strata of the air,the minute dust of which reflects most of the blue rays away from us,leaving the complementary yellow light to pass on,Then, the somewhat coarser dust reflects the green rays, leaving a more orange-coloured light to pass on;and finally some of the yellow is reflected, leaving almost pure red.

But owing to the constant presence of air currents, arranging both the dust and vapor in strata of varying extent and density, and of high or low clouds which both absorb and reflect the light in varying degrees,we see produced all those wondrous combinations of tints and those gorgeous ever-changing colours which are a constant source of admiration and delight to all who have the advantage of an uninterrupted view to the west and who are accustomed to watch for those not infrequent exhibitions of natures kaleidoscopic colour painting.

With every change in the altitude of the sun the display changes its character;and most of all when it has sunk below the horizon, and owing to the more favourable angles a larger quantity of the coloured light is reflected toward us. Especially when there is a certain amount of cloud is this the case.

These,so long as the sun was above the horizon, intercepted much of the light and colour, but when the great luminary has passed away from our direct vision, his light shines more directly on the under sides of all the clouds and air strata of different densities;a new and more brilliant light flushes the western sky,and a display of gorgeous ever-changing tints occurs which are at once the delight of the beholder and the despair of the artist. And all this unsurpassable glory we owe to——dust!

I am not an amb’s profession as superior or inferior. I merely hope to have enough to eat and enough to wear so that I can dedicate myself to writing.

Talking about writing, I have a dream to realize. I hope I can write a good play some day. This dream, however, is not a small one. To realize my dream, firstly I need to read a lot or, better still, spend a couple of years studying abroad. Secondly, I must go to the theater and see as many plays as possible to cultivate my eyes. Thirdly, I should get a job at the theater for a year or two to be in everyday contact with directors, actors and all kinds of technicians. Fourthly, perhaps, I should also learn some acting, getting a minor role to play from time to time. Even with all these prerequisites fulfilled, I am still not sure that I have the aptitude of a playwright. If not, my dream cannot come true even if I have worked the hardest. So you see, in this sense, my dream is really not a small one.

You might think I am not telling the truth一making such a ftiss over the mere writing of a play. Very well. Let us look at the matter in a broader perspective. Even in a nation without written fiction, there must be bAllads and folk-tales passed down orally. Man, in a sense, lives in memory. As he remembers the past, he cares for the future. Otherwise he loses his sense of continuity not knowing where he comes from and where he is going. Therefore, literature and arts, either in written form or oral, will never die. If they did, culture would die too.

You see how important literature and arts are!

And then, it was not until culture was further developed that man, stimulated by religious and social activities, invented drama. Drama is a genre much younger than poetry and fiction, but more beautiful and lively and more refined in constume, acting and monologue or dialogue. Drama presents to the audience the culture of the day in a vivid manner. It develops along with culture. When a nation is developed in drama, it can never be barbarized again because drama requires good stories with good ideas, refined language and good music, graceful dancing and a good stage; it also requires well-trained actors and actresses and well-mannered audiences. It is integrated with arts and culture as well. To a certain degree drama is the spokesman of culture. If by now you still held drama in contempt, I’d like you to think about one question: Is there anything else that can substitute for drama? I can assure you there is none. Here is another question for you to think about: Is there any barbarous tribe that is developed in real drama or any civilized country that is without drama?

You see how important drama is!

Since drama is so important, dont you think I should make a resolution to write one? Drama is rooted in the soil of literature and arts, but it absorbs nourishment All arts.

Well, though I am not an ambitious person, I want to make a resolution on the occasion of this Drama Festival. I don’t mean to add to the clamor but to write some plays that are indispensable to the growth of culture. Literature and arts take nourishment from culture and at the same time guide and promote culture. Of all the genres of literature and arts, drama is the only one that integrates other arts with their artistic effects.

The construction of culture has an important role to play in the War against Japanese Aggression. So when I say I want to write a good play, I am not talking nonsense. As for whether I will be able to realize my dream, it all depends on how hard I work. I am willing to work in this field together with my friends and colleagues to achieve this goal.

A veteran springboard diver, defeated by his compatriot in the finals of a worldchampionship, offering congratulations to the victor in a warm embrace and waving a tearfulfarewell to the audience. An outstanding female fencer falling in a decisive set not under theattack of her rival’s sword but as a result of a muscular spasm of her own.

Those are common occurrences in the athletic world but they are scenes of tragic heroismbringing tears to the eyes of the outgoing heroes as well as the audience. Sportsmen spendthe best part of their lives in tough training and fierce competitions fighting for ever betterrecords. When it bccomcs evident they are on the decline they still make strenuous efforts togive their best so as to bring a satisfactory end to their brilliant career.

Chances to compete for championship are few and far between. Life is short. Still shorter isthe time for an athlete trying to win games. None other than an athletic contestant feels sokeenly about the rarity of opportunity and the fleeting of time. He cherishes every minute, makes full use of it and tries to grasp any chance coming his way. He gets as much as he gives, winning honours not only for himself but also for his country.

To participate and to win—that is the Olympic spirit. It finds expression in the weak daring todefy the strong, and the strong striving for ever better performance. Ever better—the idealalways luring a sportsman forward. He will do everything he can for it, never relax, never giveup. It is said that none of the competitors can avoid being defeated—even the best is bound tobe surpassed by someone still stronger. This is the rule of sports—thousands of losers to setoff one victor who in turn will eventually be replaced by someone on the honour list. However, undaunted by the inevitable failure, he is always striving to do the best he can. When thetime comes and he knows he he will step down happily to give place to the younger winner, aware contentedly of the fact that he has done his bit for the “ever better” records of theOlympic Games. He will say proudly that he has not lived his youth in vain.

Jiuzhaigou, Chinas Fairyland

Sichuan Province in southwest China is renowned for its many fascinatingnatural wonderswhich have attraaed millions of travelers over the centuries.

The recent discovery of the scenic beauty of Jiuzhaigou (Nine-village Ravine)has added charmto the picturesque landscape. Known as "Chinas Fairyland", Jiuzhaigou is located in the hillsalong the borders of Nanping,Pingwu and Songpan counties, some 400 kilometers fromChengdu, the pro-vinaal capital. Three scenic areas-Shuzheng qunhaigou, Zechawagou andRizegou-combine to make up the 60,000 hectares of fairyland, which is nearly 2,500 metersabove sea level. Its name "Nine-village Ravine"is sup-posed to be because Tibetans onceinhabited nine villages in the ravine.

Here is a brief record in "Green Lakes", a chapter in the Annals ofNanpingCounty: "InJiuzhaigou, lakes meander for miles, with wooded hills mir-rored in the clear water." The scene, actually, is much more beautiffil than can be put into words. Sichuan Prorrince is rich in scenicwonders, each with its own distinctive features—the elegance of Mount Emei, the serenityofMount Qingcheng, the sharp precipice of Jianmen Pass, and the grandeur of Kuimen. But todepict the diverse natural beauty of Jiuzhaigou in one or two words is not nearly enough. "Fairyland",however inadequate, is perhaps the only word to choose.

Intrigued by this fairyland, true lovers of nature have tried recording its uniquebeauty inpoems, paintings, photographs and travel notes. An old local Tibetan tells the story ofJiuzhaigou: "Once upon a time, there lived deep in the mountains an immortal named Dage anda fairy maiden named Wonuosemo. They fell in love. One day, Dage presented Wonuosemowith a bright mirror which he had polished with the wind and the clouds. Unfortunately, themirror slipped from the maidens hand and broke into 108 pieces, each turning into a lake ofemerald green."It is no wonder why scenic Jiuzhaigou is so entertaining, with so manydistinctive "Green Lakes" reigning over the whole area.

China is a land of scenic contrasts, each uniquely representing its own area: West Lake inHangzhou with enchanting pavilions set in quiet surroundings, Mount Emei in Sichuan withpeaks peeping through mist and clouds, Guilin in Guangxi with panoramic views of mountainsand rivers. And Jiuzhaigou presents another view. Aged trees wave the seasons by, amidcarpets of wild flowers and thick green vegetation. Sparkling lakes and waterfalls vary withevery season. Some rare trees and grasses, survivors of the glacial epoch, still thrive here inharmony with a host of creatures which make this ravine their home, for the land teems withsuch animals as giant pandas, golden monkeys, takins, white-eared pheasants, deer and riverdeer. All of this unfolds into a panorama of beautifully balanced fauna and flora. As observersfrom Nanping County have justly put it, "All the beauty of Jiuzhaigou is endowed by nature. Ifthe natural charm were removed, there would be no more of Jiuzhaigou."Mystic lakes andsparkling waterfalls captivate your eyes as you enter the ravine. The trees are their greenestin spring when intensified by colorful flowers. In summer, warm tints spread over the hills andlakelands. As summer merges into autumn, the maple trees turn fiery-red, splashing colorthrough the thickly forested hills. Tranquility pervades primitive Jiuzhaigou throughout theyear, particularly at places around Mirror Lake and Five-flower Lake at Rizegou, and Multi-coloredLake at Zechawagou, where a profusion of colors is brought into full harmony with singular spectacle can only be seen in Jiuzhaigou-a natural preserve.

In addition to this natural beauty Jiuzhaigou, again, is noted for its three scenic areas whichare so concentrated in the region and yet so strikingly contrasted with each other thattourists cannot believe their eyes even when they see them. After visiting this fairyland inautumn, a tourist entrepreneur from abroad exclaimed, "Of all the scenic spots the world hasever produced, nothing compares with this." He then turned to his companion, the deputyhead of Nanping County, and said, "You are lucky to govern the most beautiful place in theworld."Scenic Jiuzhaigou is indeed one of natures most extravagant splendors anywhere andthe crowning glory of Sichuan Province.

Nowadays, credit cards have been increasingly popular on campus in that banks are growingly paying their attention to students and laying out various policies to cater for students’ need.

People hold different views towards students’ owning credit cards. As far as I am concerned, it should be cautious for students to keep credit cards.

Students need to be calm and wise when applying for or using credit cards . There are latent risks associated with credit cards.

Some students find it quite easy to exceed their budget.

They are tempted to purchase goods that they do not really need, and can become quickly overburdened by debt.

The credit cards often charge a high rate of interest, which exacerbates the problems for these people.

And in the long run, this irresponsible and irrational consumption behavior will be impeditive for students to develop into a good consumption habit.

On the other hand, when in emergency circumstances, credit cards will play its role and save you bother relatives or friends.

Credit cards can temporarily relieve your financial burden.

Minimum repayment or amortization is preferred alternative when you are strapped for cash.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta was often quoted as saying: "I know God will not give me anything I cant handle. I just wish He didnt trust me so much." Over the years I have found myself often feeling the same way. I have had a blessed life, but it has never been an easy one.

In my 45 years I have had to deal with sickness, injuries, accidents, and pain. I have had to deal with years of poverty and financial struggles. I have had to deal with my sons mental handicaps, the death of loved ones, and being separated from those I love. I have had to deal with anger, betrayal, confusion, depression and at times even despair.

Like so many before me I have asked the question: Why do bad things happen to good people? It is a question that has been asked throughout the ages. Books have even been written about it.

When I remember all that I have faced and gone through in this life, I realize that God has used all of it to eventually make me better. With pain came empathy. With grief came healing. With frustration came patience.

With struggles came strength. With sorrow came joy. With anger came love. And with despair came trust in God. Every test, challenge, and tragedy eventually led me to greater goodness, greater love, and greater Oneness with our Heavenly Father.

None of us likes the negative experiences in life. None of us enjoys pain. None of us wants to go through sorrow. May each day here then help you to grow better and more loving.

A distant, oversize world causes cosmic confusion

The discovery of planets around distant stars has become like space-shuttle launches--newsworthy but just barely. With some 50 extrasolar planets under their belt, astronomers have to announce something really strange to get anyone s attention.

Last week they did just that. Standing in front of colleagues and reporters at the American Astronomical Society s semiannual meeting in San Diego, the world s premier planet-hunting team--astronomer Geoffrey Marcy of the University of California, Berkeley, and his colleagues--presented not one but two remarkable finds. The first is a pair of planets, each about the mass of Jupiter, that whirl around their home star 15 light-years from Earth in perfect lockstep. One takes 30 days to complete an orbit, the other exactly twice as long. Nobody has ever seen such a configuration. But the second discovery is far stranger--a solar system 123 light-years away, in the constellation Serpens, that harbors one ordinary planet and another so huge--17 times as massive as Jupiter--that nobody can quite figure out what it can be. It is, says Marcy, a bit frightening.

What s frightening is that these discoveries make it clear how little astronomers know about planets, and they add to the dawning realization that our solar system--and by implication Planet Earth--may be a cosmic oddball. For years theorists figured that other stars would have planets more or less like the ones going around the sun. But starting with the 1995 discovery of the first extrasolar planet--a gassy monster like Jupiter but orbiting seven times as close to its star as Mercury orbits around our sun--each new find has seemed stranger than the last. Searchers have found more hot Jupiters like that first discovery. These include huge planets that career around their stars not in circular orbits but in elongated ones; their gravity would send any Earthlike neighbors flying off into space. Says Princeton astronomer Scott Tremaine: Not a single prediction for what we d find in other systems has turned out to be correct.

Microsoft planned to announce today that it will make its Windows Live Messenger service available on its Xbox 360 game consoles, bringing instant messaging from the computer to the television.

The move was meant to help Microsoft stay ahead of Sony, its chief rival in the electronic games business, in delivering the richest online experience for game players. It is also an element of Microsofts overall strategy to connect people across PCs, televisions and mobile devices like cellphones.

More than 200 million people use Windows Live Messenger to chat with friends, family members and colleagues. Separately, more than six million Xbox 360 owners are connected to the companys Xbox Live online community, an enhancement that lets people with broadband Internet connections communicate with one another.

In the second week of May, those two worlds will begin to converge. Xbox Live members will be able to link their gamertag ,the online identity they use within the Xbox community, to an existing Windows Live Messenger account. Players will then be able to chat with their instant messaging contacts using a virtual on screen keyboard or a USB keyboard plugged into the game machine.

Microsoft executives said they hoped to offer voice chat between Xbox and Live Messenger users later this year.

Minority youths are more likely to face trial as adults

A WHITE KID SELLS A BAG OF E at his suburban high school. A Latino kid does the same in his inner-city neighborhood. Both get caught. Both are first-time offenders. The white kid walks into juvenile court with his parents, his priest, a good lawyer-and medical coverage. The Latino kid walks into court with his mom, no legal resources and no insurance. The judge lets the white kid go with his family; he s placed in a private treatment program. The minority kid has no such option. He s detained.

There, in a nutshell, is what happens more and more often in the juvenile-court system. Minority youths arrested on violent felony charges in California are more than twice as likely as their white counterparts to be transferred out of the juvenile-justice system and tried as adults, according to a study released last week by the Justice Policy Institute, a research center in San Francisco. Once they are in adult courts, young black offenders are 18 times more likely to be jailed-and Hispanics seven times more likely-than are young white offenders. Discrimination against kids of color accumulates at every stage of the justice system and skyrockets when juveniles are, tried as adults, says Dan Macallair, a co-author of the new study. California has a double standard: throw kids of color behind bars, but bilitate white kids who commit comparable crimes.
