篇一:Large Muslim Community in Minnesota Observes Ramadan
MINNEAPOLIS— Ramadan is widely observed in parts of the northern U.S. state of Minnesota; a place a large Muslim community calls home.
An estimated 200,000 Muslims live in Minnesota. When you walk into the businesses and the neighborhoods where Somalis reside, you would assume you are in a Muslim country. At night, houses of worship are full of people saying the so called the “Taraweeh” prayers identified with Ramadan.
Rowda Mosque in Minneapolis is one of the places where worshipers come in masses. Imam Abdirazak Abshir Farah (aka San’ani) talks about the virtue of Ramadan.
“Muslims who are fasting shouldn't only avoid eating and drinking but all evil deeds as well.”
During Ramadan, people strive to help the poor and the needy. Farhia Isse Qalanjo is a volunteer from the Minnesota branch of “Walaal Afuri,” an organization that helps poor people in Somalia.
“In Somalia, there are people who have no relatives in foreign countries who send them money and are in dire needs. We are collecting the money for them. We don’t know them but we got their contacts through friends.”
Jamal Farah (aka Happy Khalif) is a barber at Karmel Somali Mall. He is also a well-known comedian.
“Since I came to the U.S., I have never cooked food. Maybe, I occasionally make tea for myself. You can find everything in the mall, even there is a buffet upstairs. It is easy.”
Last year, the Minneapolis City Council approved a bill that permits Somali businesses to stay open after regular closing hours during the month of Ramadan. The owner of Safari Restaurant, Abdurahman Abkos believes this came as a result of the prominent role the Somali community plays in the city.
“To extend the hours of operations during the Holy Month of Ramadan is a recognition of the role of the Somali and the Muslim communities in the city.”
This year, Ramadan came in the summer season. People fast between 17-18 hours. Some complain about the high temperature and lengthy hours, but find it spiritually rewarding.

Captivating Animal Sculptures Illustrate Tragedy of Ocean Pollution

A giant parrot fish greets visitors at the main entrance to the National Zoo. A bit farther on are a tufted puffin seabird, a freedom starfish and more — all bright, beautiful and eye-catching sculptures.
But take a closer look, and you begin to notice they are assembled with plastic toys, a hair comb, bottle caps, beer cans and many other everyday objects.
"I observed visitors coming in, thinking these sculptures are made out of recycled plastic. But, in fact, they are marine debris. And when they find out, they are shocked," said Maria Amaya, a volunteer at the National Zoo.
The sculptures were created by Angela Haseltine Pozzi — with the help of thousands of volunteers — to deliver a serious message.
The artist is executive director of Washed Ashore, a non-profit environmental group.
"This is all plastic picked up off of beaches, every single bit of it," said Pozzi, "So we have processed about 18 tons of garbage off of a small area of beach in the last six years. And it could be anywhere in the world. This is a worldwide problem, the plastic pollution issue."
So far, Pozzi has created 68 such sculptures, and 17 of them are displayed throughout the National Zoo. This whale bone ribcage is made entirely with bleach bottles; the blue marlin has flip-flops inside its mouth; and hundreds of water bottles create the jellyfish.
"I've purposely chosen to represent the animals that are threatened by marine debris,” Pozzi said. “The fact that plastic breaks down into microscopic pieces and is getting into the entire food chain means that everything in the ocean is affected by it."
A recent study estimates about eight million tons of plastic waste enters the oceans each year, and poses a threat to a wide variety of marine animals.
"Single-use plastics are probably the worst you can get,” Pozzi said. “They are used for five seconds and then last forever. We don't even think about it."
The artwork seems to be making an impact on visitors of all ages.
"First we need to make sure that no trash is washed up," said third-grader Ava Teleki, on a school field trip. "So instead of leaving it onto the beach, you need to pick it up and you need to put in the trash [can] before it gets washed out and gets [eaten by] fish. Or you can recycle it."
Diana Rodriguez visited the zoo with a friend. "We have to be more careful,” she said. “We have to be more attentive about what we do with the containers and things we use."
Pozzi hopes her traveling exhibit will reach as many people as possible across the United States, and overseas as well.
