考研英语词汇越辨越明

abandon 多指完全、永远地或放弃，这可能是被迫的，也可能是自愿的。

后面可接人(尤指对之负有责任或义务)、物、地点，指的是永远或离开很长一段时间。

后面接项目或计划，指的是在完成计划之前就放弃，此意与give up类似。

后面还可以接想法或思维方式。

注意：abandon oneself to意为放纵，沉迷于；with abandon恣意地，放纵地。

He abandoned himself to deep despair when the news came that his wife had been killed in a car accident. 当他妻子丧生车祸的消息传来，他陷入了深深的.绝望。

He has spent money with gay abandon. 他肆意挥霍金钱。

desert

后接人，表示离开此人，并不再提供任何帮助或支持。

后接物时，可以表示不再使用此物。

desert后面接职业或工作(多为部队工作)时，强调未经许可而离开，擅离职守

注意：如果是如courage，confidence之类表示品质、才能的抽象名词作主语时，意指某人丧失了该品质、才能。如：

Even when he appeared to be depressed, a dry sense of humour never deserted him。

即使当他看起来很沮丧时，他仍未丧失他那种不形于色的幽默感。

She lost the next five games, and the set, as her confidence abruptly deserted her。

由于突然丧失自信，她在接下来的五个回合中都输了，并因此输了这一局。

forsake 指遗弃以前所爱的人或事物，尤指不履行责任，着重于断绝情感上的依恋。如：

He had made it clear to his wife that he would never forsake her. 他明确地向他妻子说，永远不会离开她。

quit 指突然或出其不意地放弃。

后接工作时，表示离开、辞职，为非正式用语。如：

If I don’t get more money I’ll quit. 如果不加薪，我就辞职。

后接活动时，表示放弃该活动；注意：quit后可接动名词，表示停止，戒掉，如：quit smoking戒烟。

后接地点时，强调离开后永远不再回来。如：

Police were called when he refused to quit the building. 他拒绝迁离该楼，惊动了警方。

leave普通用词，指舍弃某事或某一职业，或终止同某人或某个组织、团体的关系，但不涉及动机。

give up 普通用语，侧重指没有希望或因外界压力而放弃。

注意：give sth up (to sb )意为将某物交给或让给某人；give oneself up (to sb)意为自首；投案。如：

That kingdom refuses to give up any territory. 那个王国拒绝割让领土。

One of the young men gave up his place on the bench to an old lady. 其中的一个年轻人将他的位置让给了一位年长的女性。

After a week on the run he gave himself up to the police. 他逃跑一周后向警方投案自首了。
