the invention of the incandescent light bulb by thomas a. edison in 1879 created a demand for a cheap, readily available fuel with which to generate large amounts of electric power. coal seemed to fit the bill, and it fueled the earliest power stations. (which were set up at the end of the nineteenth century by edison himself).

as more power plants were constructed throughout the country, the reliance on coal increased throughout the country, the reliance on coal increased. since the first world war, coal-fired power plants had a combined in the united states each year. in 1986 such plants had a combined generating capacity of 289,000 megawatts and consumed 83 percent of the nearly 900 million tons of coal mined in the country that year. given the uncertainty in the future growth of the nearly 900 million tons of coal mined in the country that year. given the uncertainty in the future growth of nuclear power and in the supply of oil and natural gas, coal-fired power plants could well provide up to 70 percent of the electric power in the united states by the end of the century.

yet, in spite of the fact that coal has long been a source of electricity and may remain on for many years(coal represents about 80 percent of united states fossil-fuel reserves), it has actually never been the most desirable fossil fuel for power plants. coal contains less energy per unit of weight than weight than natural gas or oil; it is difficult to transport, and it is associated with a host of environmental issues, among them acid rain. since the late 1960s problems of emission control and waste disposal have sharply reduced the appeal of coal-fired power plants. the cost of ameliorating these environment problems along with the rising cost of building a facility as large and comple as a coal-fired power plant, have also made such plants less attractive from a purely economic perspective.

changes in the technological base of coal-fired power plants could restore their attractiveness, however. whereas some of these changes are intended mainly to increase the productivity of eisting plants, completely new technologies for burning coal cleanly are also being developed.

Dear James, In today’s newspaper, I read about the recent events in your town and I am writing to extend my deepest condolences.

It broke my heart to see all those pictures of those whose homes have been destroyed in the tragic hurricane. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw a little girl crying on the roof of her house asking for help. I am really worried about you and your family, and all your friends there. I am crossing my fingers for you now in hopes that you are all safe and sound.

I can only imagine how difficult this time must be for you, and I want to extend to you my unwavering support. Our government and many nongovernmental organizations are initiating various campaigns to urge people to donate money and necessary things to send to America. I donated all my allowance that I have been saving for years.

I feel extremely sorry for this tragedy, and I will be looking forward to hearing from you. Please pass my concern on to your parents.

Yours sincerely,

Meng Fei

Some people prefer to work for a large company. Others prefer to work for a small company. Which would you prefer? Use specific reasons and details to support your choice.

I would prefer to work in a large company rather than a small one. A large company has more to offer in terms of advancement, training, and prestige.

In a large company, I can start at an entry-level position and work myself up to the top. I could start in the mailroom and, once I know the company, can apply for a managerial position. In a small company, there is not as much room to grow.

In a large company, there are a variety of jobs. I could work in sales, in marketing, in distribution, in shopping, or in any department I applied for. I could be trained in a variety of positions and would have valuable experience. In a small company, there would not be the same opportunity.

In a large company, there would be more prestige. I could brag to my friends that I worked for one of the biggest companies in the world. I would always have something to talk about when I met strangers. If I worked in a small company, I would always have to explain what the company did.

Working for a small company would not give me the same opportunities for advancement or on-the-job training as working for a larger company would. Nor would I be as proud to work for a small company---unless the small company was my own.

Growth is something that everyone has to go through. In our growth, we will get a lot of things, and also lose a lot of things in this period. Therefore, we should learn to grow up in treasure.

The passage of time is the easiest to take our elderly relatives away from us. We grow up in the passing time, and our family elders grow older and older in the passing time. Treasure is very important in our growth. Whether we have realized this problem before or not, now we should treasure the most precious things in our life, such as family affection, from this moment on.

We've had family affection since we were born. We have parents, grandparents and other relatives. We would like to thank them for accompanying us in our growth and for their encouragement on our growth path. But in the past, we didn't know how to cherish the young, and we often had fun to make our family angry. It's really a common reality, like me.

A few years ago, I always liked to be self-centered, and my parents often came to educate me, but I couldn't hear their opinions at all. I always remember that during that time, I often quarreled with my family.

Time is passing, I am growing up, now I have learned how lucky I am to have such a precious family.

Growth is a process that we all experience. In this process, we will understand a lot and gain a lot of truth. One of the most unforgettable inspirations we get is to know how to grow up in treasure.

Growing up in treasure, we need to treasure too many things, not only the family affection I mentioned above, but also the friendship around us, teachers and students' affection and so on. We have learned to cherish, to learn to cherish, and with practical action to cherish the most valuable feelings around us. In this way, our growth will be more full of memories and more precious.
