1. bring sth to one’s attention 使某人注意某事。如：

I brought this to his attention. 我使他注意到了这一点。

He’s brought this fact to the attention of the public. 他已使公众注意到这一事实。

2. call one’s attention to sth 提醒某人注意。如：

He called my attention to some new evidence. 他提醒我注意一些新的证据。

He called our attention to what he said. 他提醒我们注意他说的话。

3. draw [catch, attract] one’s attention 引起某人的注意。如：

What he said drew our attention. 他说的话引起了我们的注意。

He knocked on the window to catch my attention. 他敲窗户以引起我的注意。

I kept trying to attract the waiter’s attention. 我不断地示意招呼服务员。

比较：

He drew attention to the rising unemployment. 失业率日益升高引起了他的注意。

4. fix one’s attention on sth 集中注意力于某事物。如：

He fixed his attention on writing. 他专心写作。

5. pay attention to 注意。如：

Pay attention to these details. 注意这些细节。

He asked the students to pay more attention to their study. 他叫学生们更加注意学习。

注：该用法中的 to 是介词，不是不定式符号，所以其后接动词时要用动名词。如：

Pay more attention to uniting and working with those who differ with you. 更注意团结那些与自己意见不同的人一道工作。

1. 用作及物动词，主要用于下列句型：

(1) 后接名词或代词。如：

Where did you find it? 你是在什么地方找到它的?

You’d better try and find another job. 你最好设法另找一份工作。

You’ll find the answers at the back of the book. 在书后你可找到答案。

(2) 后接复合结构 (名词的复合结构、形容词的复合结构、现在分词的复合结构、过去分词的复合结构、不定式的复合结构等等) 。如：

Wefind the story (to be) very interesting. 我们发现这个故事很有趣。

I found the boy hiding behind the door. 我发现这个小男孩躲在门后。

He found the city much changed. 他发现这个城市发生了巨大的变化。

I didn’t find her an easy woman to workwith. 我发现她不好共事。

注意：后接不定式的.复合结构时，主要是 to be, 偶尔可见 to do型。另外有时也接带先行词 it 的复合结构。如：

He found it hard tofinish the work in time. 他发现要及时完成这项工作很困难。

(3) 后接that-从句。如：

Now he found that he could relax a little. 现在他发现可以放松一下了。

Newton found that all masses attract each other. 牛顿发现所有物质都互相吸引。

He found that she was a cheat. =He foundher to be a cheat. 他发现她是个骗子。

(4) 可以带双宾语，双宾语交换位置时用介词for。如：

Please find memy key. =Please find my key for me. 请给我找到我的钥匙。

试比较。如：

We found him a good teacher. 我们发现他是位好老师 (复合宾语，=We found that he was a good teacher)。

We found him a good job. 我们为他找了份好工作 (双宾语，=We found a goodjob for him)。

2. 用于find oneself, 表示“发现自己 (处于某种状态)”或“不知不觉或突然…”。如：

Suddenly I found myself face to face withthe man. 突然我发现自己面对面跟这个人站在一起。

He returnedto England to find himself famous. 他回到英国，发现自己竟出了名。

3. 注意区别 find 与find out：前者指偶然地“发现”、或通过实验而“发现”、或通过寻找而“找到”等 (参见以上各例);而后者则指通过调查或观察询问等而“查明情况或事实真相” 。如：

We mustfind out the truth of the matter. 我们必须查明事实真相。

Wemust find out where he lives. 我们必须查明他住在什么地方。

有时find out中的out可以省略。如：

Please find (out) what timethey are coming. 请了解一下他们什么时候来。

4. 是终止性动词，一般不与一段时间连用。如：

正：I found it a long time ago. 这个东西我找到很久了。

误：I (have) found it for a long time.

1. burn away 烧掉，烧毁。如：

The pile of paper burned away to nothing. 这堆已化为灰烬。

2. burn down 烧掉，烧毁。如：

A number of houses were burned down in the fire. 在火灾中烧掉了不少房子。

3. burn off 烧毁，烧尽。如：

The farmers are burning off the stubble from the fields. 农民正把地里的庄稼茬烧掉。

4. burn out 烧完，烧掉，烧坏。如：

The building was burned out and only the walls remained. 大楼被烧空了，只剩下墙。

The engine is [has] burned out. 引擎被烧坏了。

5. burn up

(1) 烧完，烧尽。如：

We burned up all the dead leaves in the garden. 我们把花园里所有的枯叶都烧掉了。

(2) 烧得很旺。如：

As we gazed, the fire burned up again. 我们正看着时，火又重新燃烧起来。

　　高中英语重点词汇：later用法归纳

1. 用作形容词和副词 late 的比较级。如：

It’s rather later than I thought. 这比我想的还要晚。

He left home later than usual. 他比平常还晚离家。

2. 用于一段具体时间之后，表示从过去或将来算起的多长时间以后，但通常不指从现在算起的多久以后。如：

误：I’ll call again a week later.(可改为…in a week)

正：I called again a week later. 一周后我又打了电话。

正：I’ll call her on March 5 and will call again a week later. 我将在3月5日给她打个电话，过一周后我将再打个电话。

但是later单独使用(即不连用具体时间)，可以表示从现在算起的“以后”(具有泛指意义)。如：

Let’s stop now and finish it later. 现在停下来，以后再完成它。

He may be busy, in which case I’ll call later. 他可能忙，如若如此，我以后再来拜访。

3. 用于 later on，表示“以后”“后来”，可用于过去或将来。如：

We’ll discuss the matter later on. 我们以后将讨论这件事。

Later on he realized his mistake. 后来他认识到了自己的错误。

4. sooner or later为习语，意为“迟早”，注意其词序不能倒过来。如：

You’ll know the truth sooner or later. 你迟早会知道真相的。

Sooner or later you’ll have to make a decision. 你早晚得拿个主意。
